Screwtape Letters 4-7

Screwtape makes references to letters from Wormwood, and I think that the book would make more sense or be more interesting if the author included letters from Wormwood to Screwtape as well as letters from Screwtape to Wormwood. In letter number four, Screwtape says that Wormwood had amateurish suggestions. Screwtape feels that he is superior to Wormwood and that Wormwood needs him. Screwtape says that people should remain focused on themselves in order to take attention away from God. I do not think that keeping a person focused on himself or herself would be a difficult task because many times people are self-centered.

I agree that would make the book more interesting and easier to understand if we were able to see the letters both from Wormwood to Screwtape as well as from Screwtape to Wormwood. I believe that if we were given both sides of the conversation it would be more beneficial to the reader.

I agree also that the book would not only be more interesting if Wormwood would write back to Screwtape, but add a twist to the plot against the patient as well. That way, it would not be so obvious to the reader as to who was doing what. This would create more of a challenge. A possible reason as to why there were amateur suggestions in the last letter could be because it is a one-sided conversation. The devil, in Screwtape always feels superior to the ones he uses and targets. If he felt superior to even God when trying to overthrow him, he would certainly feel the same way towards humans. There are many self-centered people in the world because that is what our society promotes. So, you are right.
